SOAP 灵修法SOAP Method

SOAP 是四个英文词的首字母:Scripture(经文)、Observation(观察)、Application(应用)、Prayer(祷告)。 SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer. It breaks a quiet time into four simple moves you can finish in about ten minutes, which makes it a good first method for anyone starting a daily habit. All you need is a notebook and a short passage.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
  1. S · 经文S · Scripture

Read the passage slowly, then copy out by hand the verse or two that stands out to you.

I copied verse 5: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

  2. O · 观察O · Observation

What does the passage say? Notice who is speaking and to whom, and any commands, promises or repeated words. Don't rush to apply it yet.

I see two commands and one promise. The commands are to “trust in the LORD” and to “acknowledge him”, and that “in all thy ways”; the promise is that “he shall direct thy paths.” The verse doesn't tell me to stop thinking; it tells me not to lean on my own understanding as my final support.

  3. A · 应用A · Application

What does this mean for me today? Write down one specific thing you can do today.

This week I'm weighing a job change and I've been running the numbers alone in my head. Today I'll write down the pros and cons, bring them to God in prayer first, and then talk it over with a trusted friend from church instead of deciding on my own.

  4. P · 祷告P · Prayer

Write a short prayer in your own words, bringing what you noticed and what you want to apply to God.

Lord, I admit I often trust only my own calculations. Help me trust you with my whole heart about this job decision, and direct my path one step at a time.

Prayer response

Father, thank you that you are willing to direct my path. In big things and small today, I want to come to you first. In Jesus' name, amen.

Daily practice

Before any decision today, pause for a one-line prayer: ‘Lord, I acknowledge you in this.’

Inductive Study (Observe, Interpret, Apply)

Inductive study asks three questions in order: What does it say? What does it mean? How should I respond? It lets the passage speak for itself instead of us bringing our answers to it. It suits anyone who wants to read more carefully or is preparing to lead a Bible study.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
  1. O · 观察O · Observe

Look for clues like a detective: who, what, where, when? Note repeated words, contrasts and images. Write down at least three to five observations.

Jesus is speaking to his disciples; “abide” keeps coming back and is clearly the key word; there is a picture of the vine and the branches; there is a contrast between “much fruit” and “nothing”; and abiding goes both ways, I in him and he in me.

  2. I · 解释I · Interpret

Ask what it means: why is this said? Read it in its context, glancing at the verses before and after. Sum up the main point in one sentence.

A branch doesn't bear fruit by straining; it bears fruit by staying connected. Jesus means that spiritual fruit comes from an ongoing, close relationship with him, not from my effort alone. Main point: apart from Christ I can produce nothing; joined to him, life bears fruit.

  3. A · 应用A · Apply

How should this truth change my thinking, attitude or actions? Write one specific response.

I often treat devotions as a task and drop them first when life gets busy, yet I still expect myself to be patient and loving. Today after lunch I'll set aside five minutes to reread these two verses quietly and remind myself to stay connected first.

  4. 祷告Pray

In a sentence or two, bring your response to God.

Lord Jesus, I try to bear fruit on my own and only end up tired. Help me abide in you today.

Prayer response

Lord Jesus, you are the vine and I am a branch. Keep me joined to you, let your life flow through me, and let it bear the fruit of love, patience and kindness. Amen.

Daily practice

Set a midday reminder on your phone that says “Abide in me”, and pause for a short prayer when it goes off.

Lectio Divina (Read, Reflect, Respond, Rest)

Lectio Divina is a way of reading Scripture that the church has practiced for centuries. The point is not to read much but to read slowly: take one short passage through three or four readings, each with a different question, and let a single word or phrase settle in your heart. It is especially helpful when you feel rushed, tired or in need of quiet.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
  1. 读(lectio)Read (lectio)

Read the passage slowly, aloud if you can. Notice which word or phrase catches your attention, and stay with it.

As I read, the words “heavy laden” caught me.

  2. 思(meditatio)Reflect (meditatio)

Read it again. Turn that word over: why does it stand out? What part of my life does it touch?

This month my father has been in the hospital and a project at work is behind schedule; I feel “heavy laden”. Jesus doesn't ask me to put everything down before I come; he simply says “Come unto me”, burdens and all.

  3. 祷(oratio)Respond (oratio)

After a third reading, speak to God using that word: thanks, confession, a request for help, or simply honesty about how you feel.

Lord, I'm tired. I bring you my father's health and this project. Teach me to take your yoke and learn from you, for you are meek and lowly in heart.

  4. 默(contemplatio)Rest (contemplatio)

Put down your pen and be still for two or three minutes. You don't need to say anything; simply remain before God, trusting that he is with you.

I sat quietly for three minutes, repeating “I will give you rest.” Nothing on my list disappeared, but my heart felt a little lighter.

Prayer response

Lord Jesus, thank you for inviting the weary and heavy laden to come to you. Today I'll stop pushing through on my own; I take your yoke, learn from you, and find rest in you. Amen.

Daily practice

Find a gap in your day, switch off your phone for five minutes, and quietly repeat “Come unto me” a few times.

Seven Questions Method

After reading, work through seven questions: What does this show about God? About people? Is there a sin to avoid? A promise to claim? An example to follow? A command to obey? What should I pray? Not every question will have an answer, but the list helps you notice things you might otherwise miss, and it works well with stories and letters alike.

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
Q1 · About God

What does this passage show me about God? What does he say and do?

God speaks first and calls first. He doesn't only give an order; he attaches generous promises, and his heart reaches the whole world: “in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

Q2 · About people

What are the people here like? How are their situation, weakness or faith like mine?

Abram is seventy-five, yet he is asked to leave his “country” and his “kindred” for a land he hasn't even been shown. In his place I'd have a hundred worries.

Q3 · A sin to avoid

Is there a sin or temptation to watch out for?

No sin is named here, but I recognize a temptation in myself: refusing to move until I can see the whole route, which often comes from not quite trusting God.

Q4 · A promise to claim

What does God promise here? To whom was it first given, and how can I trust it today?

“I will bless thee” was a particular promise to Abram, and through Christ its blessing has reached the nations, including me. I can trust that God will be good to me as I follow him, and that he means to bless others through me.

Q5–6 · An example and a command

Is there an example worth following? Is there a direct or implied command? How can I obey today?

The example is Abram: “So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him”, with no bargaining. His command was to go “unto a land that I will shew thee”; for me, obedience today may be small: I keep hesitating to reach out to a newcomer at church, so today I'll message him and invite him for coffee.

Q7 · A prayer to pray

Turn what you have found into a prayer.

Lord, you are the God who calls and promises first. Give me faith like Abram's to take the next step even when I can't see the whole road.

Prayer response

Faithful God, every word you spoke to Abram came true. Help me today to go where you lead, and make me a blessing to someone else. In Jesus' name, amen.

Daily practice

Today, reach out to someone you have been meaning to check on but keep putting off.

Gratitude Journal

In Psalm 103 David talks to his own soul, reminding it not to forget God's benefits. A gratitude journal is the same practice: read a passage, then count God's gifts specifically and write them down. It is useful on ordinary days, grumbling days, and days when it feels as though there is nothing to be thankful for.

A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
  1. 读与划Read and underline

Read the passage and underline everything God does for us.

I underlined forgiving, healing, redeeming, crowning with lovingkindness and tender mercies, and satisfying with good things. The first one I marked was “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities”.

Count the gifts

List three to five specific gifts from the last 24 hours. The more specific the better: a person, a word, a meal.

My daughter got up on her own this morning; a colleague offered to take one of my reports; Mom made dumplings for dinner; the rain stopped just in time for the school run; and reading Scripture before bed last night, I felt at peace.

See the Giver

Pick one gift and ask: what does this show me about God?

The colleague's help reminds me that God often cares for me through the people around me. He doesn't only watch over the big things; he notices a single report too.

  4. 称颂Bless the Lord

Like David, speak to your own soul and write one sentence of praise.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul”: you lack nothing today, because he keeps providing for you.

Prayer response

Father, my soul blesses you. Thank you for forgiving and redeeming me, and for satisfying me with good things in the small moments of each day. Help me remember your kindness instead of only seeing what I lack. Amen.

Daily practice

Today, thank one person on your list, in person or by message.

Praying the Psalms

The Psalms are the prayer book God gave his people. To pray a psalm, you read it a verse at a time, make the psalmist's words your own, and fill them in with the details of your life. It helps most when you don't know how to pray, or your prayers have shrunk to the same few sentences.

A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Read the whole psalm

Read the whole psalm once and sense its mood: praise, trust, lament or confession?

This is a psalm of trust. It stays steady from start to finish, even in the valley.

Pray it line by line

Go back to verse one. After each verse, pause and say it back to God in your own words.

“The LORD is my shepherd”: Lord, you are my shepherd, not my boss or my examiner. “I shall not want”: I often feel that I'm lacking, but today I choose to trust that you know what I need.

Fill in your life

Put specific people, situations and places into your prayer: what are my ‘green pastures’? Where is my ‘valley’?

My green pasture is these twenty quiet minutes each morning; my valley is a job search that still has no replies. “For thou art with me”: even without news, I am not walking alone.

Carry one line

Choose the line that moves you most and carry it with you today.

The line I'm carrying today: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life”.

Prayer response

Jesus, good Shepherd, thank you for laying down your life for the sheep and for leading me every day. Whether today brings green pastures or a dark valley, let your rod and staff comfort me and remind me that you are with me. Amen.

Daily practice

Write “The LORD is my shepherd” on a sticky note and put it where you'll see it most today.

Bible Character Study

A character study focuses on one person: What was their situation? What choices did they make? How did God work in their life? Bible characters are as human as we are, and their stories often hold up a mirror to ours. Before you start, read the surrounding chapter or book so you know the backstory.

And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
The background

Who is this person, and what situation are they in? Write it in two or three sentences.

Ruth is a Moabite woman who married into an Israelite family that had fled famine in Judah. Her father-in-law and husband have died, and her mother-in-law Naomi is heading back to Bethlehem, urging both daughters-in-law to return to their own families.

The choice

What does this person say or decide in the passage? What does the decision cost them?

Ruth says “whither thou goest, I will go” and “thy God my God”. It means leaving her people and their gods for a land that may not welcome her, to stay with a widow who has nothing left.

God at work

Looking at the whole story, how does God work through this person and fulfill his purposes?

Through Ruth's loyalty God brings hope back to Naomi. Ruth later marries Boaz, becomes King David's great-grandmother, and is named in the genealogy of Jesus. A foreign woman's quiet decision is woven into the great story of salvation.

The mirror

Where am I like this person? What do I want to learn from them?

I have an elder to care for too: my mother-in-law, whose health is poor and whose temper is short lately, and I'm often tempted to do the minimum. Ruth shows me that faithful love is willing to go the extra mile.

Today's response

Write down one response for today and a one-line prayer.

Tonight I'll call my mother-in-law, not just to say hello but to ask what help she needs this week. Lord, give me Ruth's kind of faithful love.

God, you care for the widow and the stranger, and you brought Ruth into your family. Thank you for welcoming me too. Help me live out faithful love in my relationships, without keeping score and without giving up halfway. Amen.

Reflecting on a Parable

Jesus often used everyday stories to teach the truths of the kingdom. With a parable, first get clear on the story itself and why Jesus told it, then ask who each character represents and where the surprise is. A parable's sharpest point is usually hidden in that surprise.

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
The setting

When, and to whom, did Jesus tell this parable? (The verses just before it usually tell you.)

Luke 15 opens with tax collectors and sinners drawing near to Jesus while the Pharisees and scribes grumble. Jesus answers with three stories in a row: the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son.

The characters

Who are the characters, and whom might each of them represent?

The father represents our heavenly Father; the younger son, the sinner who comes home; the elder brother who appears later is like the religious leaders who grumbled.

The surprise

Which detail would have surprised the first listeners most? What does it show?

In that culture a respected older man running in public would lose face, yet this father “ran, and fell on his neck”. The son has barely begun his prepared speech before the father calls for the robe, the ring and the shoes. The father's grace outruns the son's confession.

Where am I?

Which character am I most like right now?

Honestly, I'm sometimes the younger son, sure I'm “no more worthy”, and sometimes the elder, quietly resenting grace shown to others. Today I'm the first: I lost my temper badly with my child last week and have been avoiding God ever since.

  5. 回应Response

Write a response and a one-line prayer.

I'll stop hovering at a distance. Today I'll come back to the Father and confess, and I'll apologize to my child. Father, thank you for waiting for me.

Prayer response

Father, thank you for seeing me while I was still a long way off and being moved with compassion. I don't deserve it, yet you clothe me in the best robe. Help me receive others with the same grace. Amen.

One Verse, Word by Word

Word-by-word meditation slows reading right down. Break a verse or two into short phrases, dwell on them one at a time, and reread the passage stressing a different word each time. It helps when your mind is scattered, when you have little time, or when you want to memorize a passage.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Break it into phrases

Break the passage into three to six phrases and write each on its own line.

My phrases: “Be careful for nothing” / “in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving” / “let your requests be made known unto God” / “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding” / “shall keep your hearts and minds”.

Stress each word

Read it again and again, stressing a different word each time, and notice how the meaning shifts.

Stressing “every thing”, I realize it isn't only big matters that deserve prayer; my son's exam tomorrow and this month's grocery budget count too. Stressing “thanksgiving”, I see that asking and thanking belong together.

Ponder each phrase

Write one thought or question beside each phrase.

“Careful” here means anxious, so this isn't carelessness but refusing to let worry take over. “Made known unto God” tells me he wants the details. “Passeth all understanding” reminds me that peace doesn't wait until I've figured everything out, and “keep” pictures a guard standing watch over my heart.

  4. 背下来Memorize it

Close your Bible and try to say the passage from memory; repeat it a few times during the day.

I said it three times while waiting for the bus; by the third time I could do it without looking at my phone.

Prayer response

Father, I'm telling you my worries one by one: my son's exam, the household budget, tomorrow's meeting. Thank you for listening. Let your peace, which passes all understanding, guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Praying Scripture

In Ephesians, Paul writes down a prayer for the believers. To pray Scripture is to borrow those words: pray them first for yourself, then insert the name of a family member, friend or someone from church. Your prayers gain a biblical foundation and a clearer direction, which is especially helpful in intercession, or when you don't know what to ask for someone.

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Find the requests

Read the passage and list each request in it.

I find four requests: to be strengthened by his Spirit in the inner man; for Christ to dwell in the heart by faith; to be rooted and grounded in love; and to know the love of Christ and be filled with all the fulness of God.

Pray it for yourself

Change ‘you’ to ‘me’ and pray the words for yourself.

Father, according to the riches of your glory, strengthen me in my inner being by your Spirit. I've been easily discouraged these days; let Christ dwell in my heart and root my love so deeply that it doesn't rise and fall with my moods.

Pray it for others

Choose one to three people and pray the passage for them by name.

Father, I pray for Min, who has only recently come to church: may she “comprehend with all saints” the love of Christ and find a home in our small group. And I pray for my husband, that he would know your love “which passeth knowledge”.

  4. 记下来Write it down

Note whom you prayed for and what you asked, and look back later to see how God has answered.

In my prayer journal I wrote today's date and ‘Min, my husband: Ephesians 3:16–19’. I'll look back in a month.

Prayer response

Father, thank you that we can pray to you in your own words. Fill me and those I love with the love of Christ, and let us know that love more deeply day by day. Amen.

Family Devotion with Children

A family devotion doesn't need a sermon. The heart of it is reading, asking and praying together. Use questions children can understand, give everyone a turn to speak, and let the adults share too. Around fifteen minutes is plenty: short, regular and relaxed does more good than an occasional long session.

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
  1. 暖场Warm up

Start with a simple question, such as ‘What was the best part of your day?’

Mom asked, ‘What was the best part of today?’ Six-year-old Lele jumped in: ‘My teacher gave me a hug!’

  2. 一起读Read together

An adult or an older child reads the passage aloud; younger children can repeat a line after them.

Dad read Mark 10:13–16. When he reached “Suffer the little children to come unto me”, Lele repeated it, and Dad explained that ‘suffer’ here means ‘let’.

Questions for children

Ask three questions: What happened? What did Jesus feel and do? What does this tell us about Jesus?

Asked what happened, Lele said people brought children to Jesus but the disciples said no. Asked what Jesus did, his sister said he was cross, then picked the children up and blessed them. Asked what this tells us about Jesus, she thought for a moment: ‘Children matter to him.’

A grown-up shares

Mom or Dad shares in a sentence or two what the passage says to them.

Mom said, ‘Jesus says we must receive God's kingdom like a little child. I often try to earn things by doing well, but Jesus just wants me to come to him trustingly, the way Lele runs in for a hug.’

Pray and bless

Everyone prays one simple sentence, then a parent blesses the children.

Lele prayed, ‘Jesus, thank you for hugging me.’ His sister prayed, ‘Please help me not to argue with my classmate tomorrow.’ Then Dad laid his hands on their heads and said, ‘The Lord bless you and keep you.’

Prayer response

Lord Jesus, thank you for welcoming little children, and for welcoming our whole family. Make our home a place where our children can know you and experience your love. Amen.

Devotion for Couples

In a couple's devotion, two people come before God together: reading, sharing, thanking and praying for each other. The point isn't to settle who is right, but to be shaped by God's word together. Once or twice a week for fifteen minutes can gradually build spiritual closeness.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
  1. 同读Read together

Take turns reading aloud, a verse each.

After dinner we left the dishes to soak, sat on the sofa and took turns reading. (In the KJV, ‘charity’ here means love.)

Choose a phrase each

Each choose the phrase that speaks to you most and say why.

My husband chose “thinketh no evil”; he admits he tends to bring up old grievances. I chose “suffereth long”, because with our newborn I'm constantly tired and short on patience.

Thank each other

Name one recent, specific moment when your spouse showed you this kind of love.

I thanked him for getting up in the night last week to change diapers so I could sleep two more hours. He thanked me for the evening his work went badly, when I didn't press him with questions but just warmed up some soup.

Speak only for yourself

Name one area where you need to grow. Speak only about yourself, not about your spouse.

I said I want to learn to pause when I'm tired instead of snapping. He said he wants to learn to truly let go of the past.

Pray for each other

Hold hands and pray for what the other has just shared.

He prayed that God would give me strength and patience through the night feeds; I prayed that God would set him free to forgive.

Prayer response

Devotion for the Workday

A workday devotion fits before work or on your commute: let a verse or two reset your heart, bring the day's work to God, then look back briefly when you finish. It reminds you that work isn't only a way to earn a living; it is also a place to serve the Lord.

And what soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Read before work

Read the passage before work and pick out the key words.

The key words are “do it heartily” and “as to the Lord”.

Look at today's list

Open today's calendar or to-do list and pick the hardest or least appealing task.

The task I least want to do today is the third revision of a proposal for a client who criticizes everything.

Who is it for?

Ask yourself: if I were doing this ‘as to the Lord’, how would I do it?

If I were doing it for the Lord, I wouldn't cut corners or grumble through it. More importantly, my worth doesn't depend on whether this client is pleased: “ye serve the Lord Christ.”

Decide one thing

Decide on one specific way to handle it.

I'll tackle the revision at ten, when I'm freshest, and then phone the client to talk through their needs politely rather than firing off a cold email.

Look back after work

On the way home, take two minutes to look back: where did I see God today? What do I need to hand over to him?

Looking back on the way home: the client still had comments, but the tone was much softer, and I saw God help me guard my heart. I hand tomorrow's meeting over to him.

Prayer response

Lord, today I'm not only working for a boss or a client; I'm serving you. Help me work heartily, honestly and kindly, and keep your peace with me as I work. Amen.

Lament in Hard Times

Laments are the most common kind of psalm, and they show us that we may be honest before God about pain, questions and even complaints. A lament usually moves through four steps: turning to God, pouring out the trouble, asking for help, and returning to trust. When you are facing loss, illness, waiting or injustice, this method helps you bring your tears to God rather than walk away from him.

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved. But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
  1. 转向神Turn to God

Address God directly. Even if you're upset, speak to him rather than about him.

David begins, “How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD?” He doesn't go around God; he takes his question straight to him. So I begin the same way: ‘Lord, I need to be honest with you.’

Pour it out

Honestly write down your pain and your questions, without polishing them.

It has been three months since Mom's diagnosis, and the treatment hasn't gone well. Like David I am “having sorrow in my heart daily”, and many nights I can't sleep. I don't understand why nothing has changed after so much prayer.

  3. 祈求Ask

Tell God specifically what you need.

Lord, “consider and hear me”. Give the doctors wisdom, ease Mom's pain, and give me strength to care for her and stay by her side.

Return to trust

Remember God's past love and faithfulness, and write one ‘but I will trust you’ sentence, even if you can't feel it yet.

“But I have trusted in thy mercy.” Looking back, God carried our family through the year Dad lost his job. I don't feel joy yet, but I choose to say: I am still trusting you.

Prayer response

Lord, thank you that I may weep before you and even ask ‘How long?’ You have not forgotten me. Hold me up while I wait, and help me keep trusting your steadfast love. Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

A confession devotion helps us face our sin honestly while holding firmly to God's promise of forgiveness. It is not about wallowing in guilt but about coming back into the light and enjoying fellowship with God again. Use it at the end of the day, or whenever you sense something standing between you and God.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Examine

Be still and ask the Holy Spirit to shine his light. Look back over today's words, actions and thoughts.

After a few quiet moments, I remembered that in today's meeting I presented a colleague's idea as my own to look capable.

Confess specifically

Name the sins that come to mind specifically, without excuses and without glossing over them.

Lord, I confess this was pride and dishonesty. I don't want to call it ‘just a slip’; it was sin. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.”

Receive forgiveness

Read God's promise and receive it by faith: God has forgiven.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” God forgives me not because I promise to do better next time, but because he is faithful and because Jesus has already paid for my sin.

Ask for a clean heart

Ask God to renew you and give you fresh strength in this area.

Please “cleanse us from all unrighteousness”, and free me from needing others' praise to prove myself.

Make it right

If you have wronged someone, think how you can apologize or make amends today.

First thing tomorrow I'll apologize to my colleague, and at the next team meeting I'll make clear the idea was hers.

Prayer response

Faithful and just God, thank you for forgiving me for the sake of Jesus Christ. I don't have to carry guilt any longer, and I don't have to pretend. Help me walk in the light, honest with you and with others. Amen.

If your reflection brought to mind someone you owe an apology, make it within the next 24 hours.

Advent and Christmas Devotion

Advent covers the four weeks before Christmas, when many churches prepare their hearts to celebrate Christ's birth. This method reads the Christmas passages through three lenses (waiting, wonder and response) to turn our eyes back to Jesus in a busy season. You can use it all through December, and it works well as a family too.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Light a candle

Settle down and light a candle or a small lamp to remind yourself that Christ is the light of the world.

After the children were in bed, I lit a small candle on the kitchen table.

  2. 等候Waiting

Read the passage and ask: what were people waiting for then? What am I waiting for today?

Israel waited centuries for the Messiah. What I'm waiting for is healing in my long-strained relationship with my brother.

Wonder

What in this passage surprises or moves you?

The angel's first words to the shepherds are “Fear not”. The news is “to all people”, and the Savior is born “unto you”. He wasn't announced first to kings but to ordinary workers keeping watch at night.

  4. 回应Response

Like the shepherds, how can I respond to this good news?

The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and then spread the news. This Christmas I'll ring my brother first, and invite his family to our church's Christmas service.

Prayer response

Lord Jesus, thank you for being born for us to be our Savior. In this busy season, don't let me forget that true joy comes from you, and help me share this good news of great joy with those around me. Amen.

Holy Week and Easter Devotion

Holy Week and Easter stand at the center of the Christian faith: Christ died for our sins and rose again from the dead. This method walks from the cross to the empty tomb, first remembering the Lord's suffering, then, with Mary, hearing the risen Lord call us by name. Use it from Holy Week through Easter, or on any day you need hope.

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
Remember the cross

Spend two minutes remembering what Jesus suffered for you. (You might read John 19 first.)

I read John 19 and stopped at ‘It is finished.’ Jesus carried my sin all the way to the end.

Enter the scene

Read the passage and notice the emotions: why are people weeping? What are they looking for?

Mary is weeping outside the tomb, thinking someone has taken the Lord's body. She is looking for a dead Lord, so even with Jesus standing in front of her she is “supposing him to be the gardener”.

Hear your name

How does the risen Lord meet this person? Imagine him calling your name in the same way.

Jesus says just one word: “Mary.” She knows him at once. I imagine the Lord saying my name in the same way, not in rebuke, but the way a shepherd knows his own sheep.

Live the resurrection

Because the Lord is risen, what is different today?

Lately I've been anxious about the future, seeing only an empty tomb, as Mary did. But the Lord is risen; he is alive and he knows me. Today I'll hand my worries to him and go to work with hope.

Prayer response

Risen Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for me and rising again. Thank you for knowing me and calling me by name. Let me live today in the hope of the resurrection. Amen.

Daily practice

Tell one friend today, in a sentence or two, what Easter means to you.

Imaginative Gospel Meditation

This method invites you to step into a Gospel scene with your imagination: to see, hear and feel what is happening, and then to talk with Jesus. The imagination isn't there to add to Scripture, but to help you grasp more vividly what the text actually records. It suits Gospel stories, especially ones that have become too familiar.

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
  1. 预备Prepare

Be still for a minute or two and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you through this passage.

I sat on the balcony, was quiet for a while, and asked the Lord to speak to me through this passage.

Read it twice

Read it slowly twice, taking in the order of events and the details.

A storm rises and the boat is filling with water; Jesus is asleep in the stern; the disciples wake him; he rebukes the wind and the waves; then he asks them why they are afraid.

Step into the scene

Close your eyes and picture yourself there. What do you see and hear? What do you feel? Where are you standing?

I picture myself in the middle of the boat, soaked through, bailing frantically with a bucket. Wave after wave crashes in, and all I can hear is the wind and the shouting. I turn and see Jesus “asleep on a pillow”, and I'm frightened and angry at once.

Talk with Jesus

In the scene, Jesus turns to you. What do you want to say to him? In keeping with the text, what might he say to you?

My storm is the rumor of layoffs at work, and like the disciples I shout, “carest thou not that we perish?” Jesus gets up and says, “Peace, be still,” then looks at me and asks, “Why are ye so fearful?” It is a real rebuke, yet I also hear an invitation in it: I am in your boat; you can trust me.

Back to the text

Open your eyes, read the passage once more, check your reflection against it, and write down what moved you most.

Reading it again, I notice that Jesus was in the boat the whole time, even before the calm. I wrote: nothing is settled about the layoffs yet, but Jesus hasn't left my boat.

Prayer response

Lord Jesus, even the wind and the sea obey you. I confess that I am often afraid and think you don't care. Increase my faith to trust that you are in my boat even before the storm dies down. Amen.

Daily practice

When anxiety rises today, pause and say to yourself: ‘The Lord is in my boat.’

Promises and Commands

This method reads Scripture with two pens: one color for God's promises, another for his commands, and then looks at how the two connect. In Scripture, God's commands usually rest on his promises. It is especially useful at a new beginning, before a big challenge, or whenever you need courage.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Mark the promises

In one color, underline what God promises to do.

Promises: “then thou shalt make thy way prosperous”, and “the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Mark the commands

In another color, underline what God asks us to do.

Commands: the book of the law “shall not depart out of thy mouth”; “meditate therein day and night”; “observe to do”; and “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed”.

Connect them

How are the commands and promises connected? Which is the foundation?

God tells Joshua to be courageous, not because Joshua is strong enough, but because God is “with thee”. The ‘success’ here means walking in God's way under his guidance, not a guarantee of an easy life or of wealth.

Today's obedience

Relying on this promise, which command will I obey today?

Next week I'm leading our small-group Bible study for the first time, and I'm nervous. Today I'll memorize these two verses and start preparing properly instead of putting it off.

Prayer response

LORD my God, thank you for promising to be with me wherever I go. Help me meditate on your word day and night, and give me courage to obey it. Amen.

Daily practice

Write the one command you will obey today on a sticky note and check it off when it's done.

Small-Group Devotional Sharing

In a small-group devotion, everyone first reads quietly on their own, then each person shares what they noticed and what they will do, and the group prays for one another and follows up at the next meeting. No speaker is needed; everyone takes part. It works for small groups, fellowships, workplace Bible studies and online groups.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
  1. 开场Open

The leader opens with a short prayer and reminds everyone of the ground rules: brief, honest and confidential.

Our leader, Ming, prayed and then said, ‘Everyone gets a minute today, and what's shared here stays here.’

  2. 朗读Read aloud

One or two people read the passage aloud, then everyone rereads it silently for three minutes.

Fang read James 1:22–25 aloud, and we all read it again silently for three minutes.

Share in turn

Each person takes a minute to answer two questions: Which line spoke to me? How will I live it out this week?

I shared that I'm the one who looks “in a glass” and “straightway forgetteth”: moved by the sermon on Sunday, it's gone by Monday. This week I'll write one point from the sermon on a sticky note by my computer. Another brother picked “doers of the word” and plans to visit a neighbor who is in the hospital.

Respond and encourage

When others share, don't interrupt or lecture; offer only brief encouragement.

Ming said, ‘Thanks for being honest; I'm often the same.’ No one lectured, and the room felt warm.

Pray in pairs

Pair up and pray for each other's action steps.

I paired up with that brother. I prayed for his visit to his neighbor, and he prayed that I would remember and live out the sermon.

Follow up

Note down everyone's action step, and at the start of the next meeting ask, ‘How did it go this week?’

Ming noted in the group chat: me, the sticky note; the brother, his visit. Next week we'll start by asking about both.

Prayer response

Lord, we don't want to be hearers only. Help us take today's words home and into our work, remind one another, and grow together. Amen.

· A misunderstanding with a coworker needs honest conversation without more harm. Feelings deserve acknowledgment, but they are not the whole story. Distinguish what happened, your interpretation, and what remains unknown. Arrange a short conversation and restate the other's concern first.

Choosing a direction: Read the passage again

· I am considering my career direction and do not want income or approval to be my only guide. Read the passage in its surrounding section. Notice speaker, audience, and context instead of turning Scripture into an instant formula. Write three vocational values and compare your options.
