13:1–6 · Psalm 13:1–6

English

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved. But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

Psalm 13 moves from cries during prolonged waiting toward trust in God's mercy. Lament and trust belong in the same psalm; grief need not be hidden before praying. Since my loved one died, ordinary moments unexpectedly bring them to mind. Grief makes familiar life feel strange. Tears can be a way of speaking to God. Begin with a small concrete response today: Write one memory of your loved one and share it if you wish. Feelings deserve acknowledgment, but they are not the whole story. Distinguish what happened, your interpretation, and what remains unknown.

Prayer response

English

Father, Since my loved one died, ordinary moments unexpectedly bring them to mind. Give me courage to face my feelings and patience to separate facts from assumptions. In Jesus' name, amen.
