To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved. But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

Psalm 13 moves from cries during prolonged waiting toward trust in God's mercy. Lament and trust belong in the same psalm; grief need not be hidden before praying. A friend is grieving and I want to be present without forcing the right words. Comfort often needs fewer explanations and more presence. Silence need not be filled. Begin with a small concrete response today: Offer a meal or quiet company to your friend.

Father, A friend is grieving and I want to be present without forcing the right words. Be with me here and help me bring my feelings honestly before you. Comfort often needs fewer explanations and more presence. Silence need not be filled. Give me wisdom and courage to respond today: Offer a meal or quiet company to your friend. While the outcome is uncertain, help me fulfill my responsibilities patiently and receive support from trustworthy people. Let my words and actions show love as I entrust what I cannot control to you. In Jesus' name, amen.
