A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Psalm 23 portrays care through images of a shepherd and a host without avoiding dark paths. Applying it to health seeks presence and provision, not a guarantee that every illness will heal as expected. Surgery is approaching; I trust the medical team and still feel afraid. Fear before surgery can coexist with trust. Prayer asks for presence while making room for preparation. Begin with a small concrete response today: Confirm preoperative instructions and transportation. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.
