1:19–25 · James 1:19–25

English

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

James connects hearing with doing, first addressing listening, speech, and anger. Reflection can begin by examining how we hear and respond in relationships. A friend and I have drifted apart, and I want to reach out without pressure. Reaching out cannot guarantee renewed closeness. A respectful greeting can still begin kindness. Begin with a small concrete response today: Send a greeting that does not demand an immediate reply.

A question to sit with

English

As I reflect on “Reconnect with a friend”, what do I need to acknowledge honestly? How could I practice this passage today?

One small step today

English

Send a greeting that does not demand an immediate reply.

Prayer response

English

Father, A friend and I have drifted apart, and I want to reach out without pressure. Be with me here and help me bring my feelings honestly before you. Reaching out cannot guarantee renewed closeness. A respectful greeting can still begin kindness. Give me wisdom and courage to respond today: Send a greeting that does not demand an immediate reply. While the outcome is uncertain, help me fulfill my responsibilities patiently and receive support from trustworthy people. Let my words and actions show love as I entrust what I cannot control to you. In Jesus' name, amen.
