1:19–25 · James 1:19–25

English

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

James connects hearing with doing, first addressing listening, speech, and anger. Reflection can begin by examining how we hear and respond in relationships. When a friend shares a struggle, I rush to advise instead of listening. Listening helps people feel received. Rushing to solve can obscure the pain they want to express. Begin with a small concrete response today: Ask whether your friend wants listening or help with solutions. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.

A question to sit with

English

As I reflect on “Learning to listen”: What would I pray if I did not need to polish my words?

One small step today

English

Write four short prayer lines: thanks, worry, request, and release.

Prayer response

English

Father, When a friend shares a struggle, I rush to advise instead of listening. I come in my own words; even when they are unfinished, hear me. In Jesus' name, amen.
