But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

This conversation in Mark concerns the disciples' desire for status. Jesus redefines greatness through service and illustrates the path through his own mission. I do not want to assume what others need; I want to listen before acting. Listening before planning service keeps our enthusiasm from eclipsing another person's situation. Begin with a small concrete response today: Ask what is most needed before choosing how to help. Feelings deserve acknowledgment, but they are not the whole story. Distinguish what happened, your interpretation, and what remains unknown.

English
As I reflect on “Begin with the need”: What are facts, and what are still my guesses?
One small step today
English
Write facts and guesses in two separate columns.

English
Father, I do not want to assume what others need; I want to listen before acting. Give me courage to face my feelings and patience to separate facts from assumptions. In Jesus' name, amen.
