This conversation in Mark concerns the disciples' desire for status. Jesus redefines greatness through service and illustrates the path through his own mission. I do not want to assume what others need; I want to listen before acting. Listening before planning service keeps our enthusiasm from eclipsing another person's situation. Begin with a small concrete response today: Ask what is most needed before choosing how to help. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.
