English

Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

Isaiah 46 contrasts idols with God and emphasizes lasting care for God's people. Reflection on aging and caregiving should remember the passage's focus on continuing faithfulness. An older friend has little company, and I want to care consistently rather than only once. An older person's loneliness needs consistent connection. A kind greeting can grow into steady care. Begin with a small concrete response today: Agree on the next contact and put it in your calendar. Feelings deserve acknowledgment, but they are not the whole story. Distinguish what happened, your interpretation, and what remains unknown.

A question to sit with

English

As I reflect on “An older person alone”: What are facts, and what are still my guesses?

One small step today

English

Write facts and guesses in two separate columns.

Prayer response

English

Father, An older friend has little company, and I want to care consistently rather than only once. Give me courage to face my feelings and patience to separate facts from assumptions. In Jesus' name, amen.
