1:19–25 · James 1:19–25

English

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

James connects hearing with doing, first addressing listening, speech, and anger. Reflection can begin by examining how we hear and respond in relationships. A friend's good news brings my own disappointment into view, and I do not want to offer empty congratulations. You can acknowledge disappointment while listening to a friend's joy. Sincere encouragement need not wait for every mixed feeling to vanish. A small step today: Offer a specific encouragement and bring your disappointment to a suitable private conversation. Review is not a scorecard. Notice small changes, what still needs time, and where another person's company may help. Growth can be slow.

English

As I reflect on “Receiving a friend's good news”: What changed this week, and whose support do I need next?
