English

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

This conversation in Mark concerns the disciples' desire for status. Jesus redefines greatness through service and illustrates the path through his own mission. A new volunteer suggests a different approach, and I fear my experience no longer matters. Jesus' response to status reminds me that service is not about remaining indispensable. Experience can help someone else participate. A small step today: Hear the suggestion fully, then propose one improvement to try together. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.

A question to sit with

English

As I reflect on “Making room for a new volunteer”: What would I pray if I did not need to polish my words?

One small step today

English

Write four short prayer lines: thanks, worry, request, and release.

Prayer response

English

Father, A new volunteer suggests a different approach, and I fear my experience no longer matters. I come in my own words; even when they are unfinished, hear me. In Jesus' name, amen.
