If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

James 1 invites those lacking wisdom to ask God in the context of trials. Wisdom includes responsible action amid difficulty as well as information. An unfamiliar idea challenges my view, and I quickly want to refute it. Wisdom requires understanding first. Accurate restatement prepares responsible judgment without requiring agreement. A small step today: Summarize the reasons in your own words before writing a clarifying question.

Father, An unfamiliar idea challenges my view, and I quickly want to refute it. Help me see my needs and responsibilities through your word. Wisdom requires understanding first. Accurate restatement prepares responsible judgment without requiring agreement. Give me courage to respond: Summarize the reasons in your own words before writing a clarifying question. Help me trust where things remain uncertain and receive fitting company. In Jesus' name, amen.
