English
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

James 1 invites those lacking wisdom to ask God in the context of trials. Wisdom includes responsible action amid difficulty as well as information. An unfamiliar idea challenges my view, and I quickly want to refute it. Wisdom requires understanding first. Accurate restatement prepares responsible judgment without requiring agreement. A small step today: Summarize the reasons in your own words before writing a clarifying question. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.

English
As I reflect on “Meeting an unfamiliar idea”: What would I pray if I did not need to polish my words?

Father, An unfamiliar idea challenges my view, and I quickly want to refute it. I come in my own words; even when they are unfinished, hear me. In Jesus' name, amen.
