1:19–25 · James 1:19–25

English

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

James connects hearing with doing, first addressing listening, speech, and anger. Reflection can begin by examining how we hear and respond in relationships. I keep saying we should meet but never reserve time. Begin with what actually happened and distinguish your responsibilities. A faithful response can unfold through honest words and a concrete action. A practice for today: Offer two workable times and confirm a real arrangement. Responding to Scripture need not mean a grand decision. One achievable action today may be more honest than a vague promise to change.

A question to sit with

English

As I reflect on “Making time for friendship”: Which step is within my responsibility today?

One small step today

English

Choose the smallest part of this reading's practice and put it on today's calendar. Offer two workable times and confirm a real arrangement.

Prayer response

English

Father, I keep saying we should meet but never reserve time. Give me courage to do what I can today and grace to accept my limits. In Jesus' name, amen.
