Psalm 13 moves from cries during prolonged waiting toward trust in God's mercy. Lament and trust belong in the same psalm; grief need not be hidden before praying. Distance and responsibilities prevented me attending an important farewell. Begin with what actually happened and distinguish your responsibilities. A faithful response can unfold through honest words and a concrete action. A practice for today: Mark the farewell through a letter or quiet remembrance and tell someone about unfinished feelings. Do not rush to solve the whole situation. Notice your body, surroundings, and inner voice, and bring your present need before God.
