If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. James 1 invites those lacking wisdom to ask God in the context of trials. Wisdom includes responsible action amid difficulty as well as information. I collect notes without making time to understand or explain them. Begin with what actually happened and distinguish your responsibilities. A faithful response can unfold through honest words and a concrete action. A practice for today: Explain one point in your words, then compare it with the source. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.
