1:5–8 · James 1:5–8

English

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Reflecting in daily life · Devotional interpretation

English

James 1 invites those lacking wisdom to ask God in the context of trials. Wisdom includes responsible action amid difficulty as well as information. I have found that familiar answers are incomplete. Wisdom allows understanding to be revised. Admitting limits makes room for learning. Begin with a small concrete response today: Note one claim needing verification and consult a reliable source. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.

English

As I reflect on “Humility in learning”: What would I pray if I did not need to polish my words?

One small step today

English

Write four short prayer lines: thanks, worry, request, and release.

Prayer response

English

Father, I have found that familiar answers are incomplete. I come in my own words; even when they are unfinished, hear me. In Jesus' name, amen.
