Psalm 13 moves from cries during prolonged waiting toward trust in God's mercy. Lament and trust belong in the same psalm; grief need not be hidden before praying. A family member is missing from the holiday table, and I hesitate to say their name. Celebration and longing can coexist. Allow different ways of remembering without requiring everyone to respond alike. A small step today: Ask whether the family would welcome sharing one warm memory. Prayer does not require a performance of calm. Name gratitude, fear, questions, and hope in turn, and leave room for silence.
